Main Text
Click Edit on any item you have Write access to and you'll be taken to the item editor. This page walks through each part of the editor. The item's main text is covered separately in Rich Text Editor.
Saving and Collaborating
Autosave
The editor saves your work automatically a few seconds after you stop making changes. The save button in the top bar shows the current status: Save Changes, Saving..., Saved, or Error. You can also click it to save right away. If you try to leave the page with unsaved changes, your browser will warn you first.
Click Preview to view the item as readers will see it, or Discard Changes to leave the editor.
Editing Together
The editor is collaborative — any number of people with Write access can edit the same item at the same time, and everyone sees each other's changes live. While others are editing:
Their avatars appear at the top of the editor.
Fields they're currently working in are outlined in their color.
Their avatar is shown on the tab they're viewing.
Their cursor and selection are shown, with their name, in the text editor.
If you lose your connection to the server, the editor will tell you and offer a Reload button.
Item Details
At the top of the editor are the item's basic details:
Title
Shortname — changing this changes the item's URL. Other people currently editing the item won't be able to save their work, so change it with care! Links to this item from other items are updated automatically.
Type — if the item is missing any of the default tabs for its type, you'll see an Add Missing Tabs button.
Tags — type a tag and press Space or Enter to add it. Click a tag to remove it. Tags help you organize and search items.
Vault — move the item into or out of a vault.
Enable comments — show a comments section on the item. See Discussion and Comments.
Enable notes — show the Notes tab to everyone. See Notes.
Tabs
Below the details is a tab bar, matching the tabs readers see on the item page.
Add a tab by clicking +, choosing a tab type, and clicking New Tab. For Custom Data tabs you'll also need to give the tab a name.
Remove a tab by selecting it and clicking the trash icon that appears on it. This deletes all of the tab's data!
Each built-in tab (Main Text, Lineage, Map, Timeline, Gallery) can only be added once, but you can have as many Custom Data tabs as you like.
Main Text
The item's main body. See Rich Text Editor.
Custom Data
Custom data tabs hold simple key-value pairs — perfect for stat blocks, quick facts, or any structured information. For example, a character might have a "Stats" tab with keys like Age, Height and Occupation.
Type a key name and click Add New Key to add a row.
Fill in the value next to each key.
Click Remove to delete a row.
Values support markdown formatting.
Gallery
The gallery holds images related to the item.
Click Upload Image, select one or more images, and click Upload.
Give each image a Label (supports markdown), which is shown under it in the gallery.
Drag images to reorder them.
Use Download to save an image, or Remove Image to delete it.
Each image can be up to 25 MB, and images count towards your universe's storage limit (25 MB for free universes, 5 GB for premium universes). Gallery images can also be inserted into the item's main text — see Rich Text Editor.
Lineage
The lineage tab records an item's parents and children, and displays them as a family tree. It's most useful for characters, but works for anything — for example, a nation and the states that split from it, or a language family.
To add a relationship, use the Add New Parent or Add New Child row:
Pick the related item from the dropdown.
Enter this item's title in the relationship — e.g. "Son" or "Daughter" when adding a parent.
Enter the other item's title — e.g. "Father" or "Mother".
Relationships are shared between both items, so adding a parent to one item also adds a child to the other. Click a related item's button to remove the relationship.
Timeline
The timeline tab lists events in the item's history, displayed in chronological order.
Add an event under Add Events by entering a Title and a Time, then clicking Create New Event. Click the 📅 button to pick a date and time.
Edit or Remove events in the Events list.
Each item can have one event without a title, which acts as the item's "default" event — e.g. the date an event item happened.
Click Import Event to show an event from another item on this item's timeline. For example, a character's timeline could include the battle they fought in. Imported events are shown as "event of item" and can only be edited on the item they belong to.
Dates currently use the Earth (Gregorian) calendar. Support for custom in-universe calendars is planned.
Map
The map tab displays an image with pins marking locations on it.
Click Upload Image to set the map image. Uploading a new image replaces the old one.
Click anywhere on the map to add a pin, and drag pins to move them.
Select a pin to give it a title, link it to another item (such as a city's Location item), or Remove Location.
On the item page, pins linked to other items act as links, so readers can click through your map to explore your world.
Custom Tab Types
Premium universes can define their own structured tab types, like character sheets. These appear in the + menu alongside the built-in tabs, and show a form with fields defined by the tab type.
