Main Text
Items are the building blocks of a universe. Each item describes one thing in your world: a character, a city, a war, a magic sword, a religion — whatever you need. This page covers creating, viewing, browsing and deleting items. For editing, see Item Editor.
Creating an Item
You need Write access to a universe to create items in it. From the universe's Items tab, click one of the item type cards and then the + New card, or click All Items and then + New Item. Fill in:
Title — the item's name.
Shortname — used in the item's URL, and for linking to it from other items. It's filled in automatically from the title, but you can change it. See shortname rules.
Type — one of the universe's item types.
Vault — optionally place the item in a vault. Only shown if you have Write access to a vault.
Click Create Item and you'll be taken to your new item. It will start with whichever default tabs are configured for its type. You're automatically subscribed to notifications for items you create.
Tip: If you follow a link to an item that doesn't exist yet, you'll be offered a link to create it with the shortname already filled in. This makes it easy to write first and fill in the gaps later — and the Stats page lists all your dead links.
Viewing an Item
An item's page shows:
A title card in the color of the item's type, with the item's type and universe (or vault).
Who created the item and when it was last updated.
The item's tags. Click a tag to see all items in the universe with that tag.
Linked to by N items — click show to see every item that links to this one.
An action bar with:
Subscribe / Unsubscribe — get notified when someone comments on this item.
Edit — opens the item editor (Write access required).
Delete — see Deleting an Item (Owner access required).
Tabs
The rest of the page is split into tabs. Which tabs an item has is up to you — you can add and remove them in the item editor. The tab bar is hidden if an item only has one tab.
Tab | What it shows |
|---|---|
Main Text | The item's main body, written with the rich text editor. |
Custom data tabs | Named lists of key-value information, like a character's stats or a country's demographics. |
Custom tab types | Structured tabs like character sheets. A premium feature. |
Timeline | A list of dated events. |
Gallery | A grid of images. Click an image to view it full-screen. |
Lineage | A family tree, showing up to 10 generations of parents and children. |
Map | An image with pins marking locations, which can link to other items. |
Notes | Notes that have been linked to this item. |
Each tab has its own URL (e.g. ?tab=lineage), so you can link directly to a specific tab.
Comments
If comments are enabled for the item, a Comments section appears at the bottom of the page. See Discussion and Comments.
Related Items
In universes with semantic search enabled, item pages also show a Related Items section listing up to 6 items from the same universe with similar content.
Browsing Items
You can browse items in two places:
A universe's items — from the universe's Items tab, click a type card or All Items.
All your items — the
/itemspage lists items across every universe you have access to.
Both lists have:
Sort by — Updated, Created, Type, Title or Author, in Descending or Ascending order.
A Table / Cards layout toggle. In table view, you can also click a column header to sort.
A Search... box, which searches item titles, shortnames, tags and body text.
Clicking a type, universe or tag in the list filters the list down to just that type, universe or tag.
Deleting an Item
Only universe Owners can delete items. Click Delete on the item's page, type the item's shortname to confirm, and click Delete Item. This is permanent and cannot be undone:
All images uploaded to the item are deleted.
All comments on the item are deleted.
Notes pinned to the item are not deleted, but they are unpinned.
